What Happened When You Called

What happened is greater than you can now see or understand — yet simpler than you’d expect. Salvation isn’t a process you complete or a reward you earn; it’s a Person you receive. The One you called died on the cross for your sins and finished the work of redemption completely. He was buried, and on the third day He rose from the dead — and in resurrection He became the life-giving Spirit. So the moment you called on His name, He breathed Himself into you (John 20:22): the living Lord Jesus entered your spirit. That’s what just happened — not a ritual, but a Person coming in. Now keep calling His name, and He will become your life and your everything.

To answer that fully will take a lifetime. Consider Saul of Tarsus. On the road to Damascus he was hunting down everyone who called upon the name of the Lord Jesus — the very thing you have just done. Suddenly a light flashed from heaven, and Saul fell to the ground. Blinded and undone, he asked the most important question of his life: “Who are You, Lord?” The answer changed his life forever: “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting.” Look closely at His answer. Saul was seizing men and women on earth — yet the Lord in heaven said, you are persecuting Me. He had so joined Himself to everyone who calls on His name that to touch them was to touch Him. This became the vision that governed the rest of Paul’s life: Christ and all who call on Him are joined into one — He living in them, and they, together, His Body on earth. “I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision,” he later told a king (Acts 26:19). That is who the Lord Jesus is: the Almighty God, the eternal Creator, who became a man, died, and rose — and who now lives in all who call on Him. So to know Him is not to know a distant God far above you, but the God who has come to live in His people — and now in you. And because He is alive today, He hears and answers the very moment you cry out: “Lord Jesus!”

Two things, at once. Your sins are gone. You were under God’s righteous judgment — “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23) — but the moment you called, that judgment was lifted: you have “passed out of death into life” (John 5:24). And then the greater wonder: you were given God’s own life. You were born again — His Spirit came into your spirit, and you became a child of God (John 3:6; Romans 10:9). You can now call the eternal God your Father, because you truly are His child. He took away the sin you were never meant to carry, and gave you the very life you were made for.

Everything that matters most. Until now your spirit — the deepest part of you, the part made for God — was empty and dark. Now He lives there: you are joined to Him as one spirit, a new creation (1 Corinthians 6:17; 2 Corinthians 5:17). That’s why something already feels different — a part of you that was asleep is suddenly awake. You can begin to sense Him, with a quiet joy and peace that didn’t come from your own effort (Romans 8:16). If it’s faint, don’t worry — it’s real, and it grows.

Go on the way you began: “As you received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk in Him” (Colossians 2:6). The main thing is simple — keep calling on His name, and talk to Him through the day as you would a friend. You don’t need long or special prayers; just be real with Him. He is nearer than your breath, and as you keep turning to Him He becomes more and more your very life.

Yes — but not by trying harder. When you called, you received the life of God — His own life, which holds His very nature. Think of a seed: everything the tree will be is already inside it, and as it grows it produces that tree on its own — naturally, without effort. In the same way, as God’s life grows in you, it spontaneously makes you like your Father — like Him in life, in nature, and in the way you live. And there is more. So far He lives in your spirit — but your heart, too, was made to be His home. Now He longs to make His home there (Ephesians 3:17), settling into its every room — your thoughts, your feelings, your choices — until what was anxious and restless becomes “life and peace” (Romans 8:6). This is the normal Christian life: any real change in you is the fruit of His life growing in you — His work, not yours. He came to give you Himself, that you might “have life, and have it abundantly” (John 10:10).

You have been given the joy of salvation — the joy of knowing your sins are gone and that God Himself now lives in you. The salvation itself can never be lost; it rests on God, solid as a rock. But its joy is more like a tender flower, easily bruised by the smallest wind — so it needs your care. When it dims — and at times it will — these four things bring it back:

• Confess. When you sin, acknowledge it to the Lord at once; He forgives and cleanses, and the cloud lifts. (1 John 1:9; Psalm 32:1-5)
• Take in the Word. The Bible is your food — so don’t only study it, feed on it. Take a little each day and let it nourish you; the Lord’s own words “are spirit and are life” (John 6:63). Start with the Gospel of John. (1 Peter 2:2)
• Pray. Pour out your heart to Him in your own words, and keep calling “O Lord Jesus!” — real prayer releases His joy. (John 16:24)
• Don’t go alone. Walk with others who call on the Lord from a pure heart; the sweetest joy is enjoying Him together. (2 Timothy 2:22; 1 John 1:3-4)

You never need long or fancy prayers. Say these out loud:

• To know you’re His: “Lord Jesus, thank You — You have saved me.” · “Lord Jesus, You are in me, and I am Yours.”
• To stay in His joy: “O Lord Jesus!” (anytime, anywhere) · “Lord, cleanse me and keep me near.” · “Lord Jesus, I love You — fill me again.”
